Please note. If you have a message for me about an absence, change of dismissal procedure, a different person picking up your child, etc. a written note would be appreciated.
I check for notes as soon as the students settle themselves for the start of the day.
I don't always check my email until later in the day or evening. (Teachers don't get much of a chance to sit at their desks during the day). If you need a quick response from me, a written note sent in with your child would be the best way for me to know you have something to bring to my attention.
The secretaries at the front office would appreciate emails about advance absences, family trips, change of dismissal procedures, etc. I usually send them down the notes I receive for them to make a copy and keep on file in the office. We are just trying to make sure your child is safe, as well as follow your requests.
Welcome to the webpage of Mrs. DeNotaris. It will be an exciting year in Second Grade. Grades K-5 use the Envisions Pearson Math Program. It is an engaging, thought provoking program that allows students to problem solve using manipulatives and many other online resources. Our Language Arts/Literature Program-
Treasures uses a variety of literature from around the world. It enhances reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Who We Are as Americans is our Social Studies Program under the ConnectEd/McGraw -Hill.com website. We will focus on our country, our world, Native Americans, map skills, vocabulary, and more.
The FOSS Science Program which a hands on science series will introduce students to Liquids and Solids, living things, such as mealworms and butterflies and more.
Character Education is every Friday from October through May
Please review your child's homework folder on a daily basis. Remember to sign and return class tests for reading, math, social studies and science.
The students will have weekly spelling words (which they will be tested on Fridays) a weekly anthology story; or a COLD READ COMPREHENSION TEST (also tested on most Fridays) there are some stories they might not be tested on, and there are some "Factual" stories they will be allowed to take as an "Open Book" test.
SPELLING - Homework assignments are listed on the cover of their Homework Book. In addition, a separate sheet of paper with their spelling words is placed in their Homework Book. On Tuesday, they
will have a Vocabulary Context Clue Sheet for homework. They are to reread the story aloud to someone at home. The adult will sign the Context Clue sheet and the student returns it to school the next day. The RED Spelling Homework Book does not come home on Tuesday, unless a student did not complete a previous homework assignment.
The weekly schedule is:
Monday - The students are to write each word 2 times each.
Tuesday - They have a vocabulary worksheet that is integrated with our anthology story.
Wednesday - They are to write their spelling words in alphabetical order ( to save paper, we are asking that the students use both sides of the pages in their Homework
Thursday - They are to write "5" sentences, using the words from their spelling list, and to study their words for their Spelling Test. ( hopefully, they have studied each night, while doing their previous homework assignments) :)
Please note, some students usually ask to write more than 5 sentences, that is more than fine with me. I encourage them to challenge themselves.
Some students do it for the extra DeNotaris Dollars :)
Friday - Spelling and Reading tests are given.
